Verizon Brings in FIOS

I live in a Condo complex of 151 homes in San Dimas, CA. where we are served with dial tone by General Telephone / GTE / Verizon on copper underground. As Verizon rolls out FIOS here is So. Cal., we are being upgraded to fiber to the home (FTTH) in 2009.

A week or so later we get this new pull to take us to the front of the building

There are four units in this building so my guess is that this will feed all four ONTs.

There are 12 fiber conductors in this cable assembly, all contained in the blue conduit (cladding) and you can see how big they are. Everything else in here is just for installation ease or for resilience. There are multiple extruded plastic fillers (buffer) so that the cable will bend more easily and not get crushed should you happen to back over it. There is a hard plastic outer shell (jacket) for weather and insect protection but I have no idea why the orange nylon threads are there unless they facilitate the removal of the plastic outer shell like the plenum cabling that you use for Ethernet.

It's been a busy couple of weeks in the neighborhood. The backbone is all the way through the complex and they're pretty close to being complete on splicing the MDUs and the drops for the ONTs.

We've got a nice update. My guess is that the Engineer walked the job, saw Fios feed u-turn.jpg and told them to install this. Much better.jpg Personal vault.jpg

They must have forgotten and left one of the MDUs open following a recent install but regardless of the why, here's the how of the insides.

There are multiple layers to the cabinet and this is the top. Once installed, this is all the access that most Verizon Installation and Repair Techs are going to need. This is the second layer or the back of the top layer. This is the 12 conductor fiber from the cabinet or vault in the street complete with splices for the sc ends. MDU IO panel rear.jpg

This is the third layer. You can see where the single 12 conductor fiber from the street comes in at the bottom left and exits to the residences just to the right of that as individual runs. This is all service loop and the splices for the runs to the residences. MDU fiber.jpg
